Lucky Loser or Crafty Winner?

Lucky Loser or Crafty Winner?
06 Nov 2024

The 2024 US presidential election is over and Trump won it, convincingly. America has spoken and this time there are no excuses for the majority who voted for Trump. They knew exactly who the man is and what he stands for! Or did they? Some will say that the mainstream media were biased in their portrayal of the two candidates or that the campaign of the Democratic Party was not forceful enough or even that there was foreign interference. I don't buy any of those arguments. In my opinion, it was all about immigration and the economy and how the Trump team twisted and merged the two into a single issue which they could then sell to a largely uneducated electorate in remote areas. Another important influence among less educated voters was the preconceived notion that a male leader is more effective. Finally, I would also consider the fact which emerged live on our screens courtesy of Elon's wit... Apparently, you can easily buy votes at around $50-100 a pop in America these days.

Of course, the real state of the economy has nothing to do with the policies of the two main parties although I would argue that the plan of the Democratic Party was a lot more transparent in terms of goals and their evaluation timeframe. Nevertheless, I will not expand on the issue here because I do not believe in the merits of economic analyses that are separated from politics. In fact, I firmly believe that economics has evolved into a 'false science' which pretends to apply the paradigms of natural sciences in financial models that influence market trends, in order to create a 'scientific' smokescreen over the roulette game of the stock exchange.

The hypothesis that a country's strong economy is explained with a GDP of $28.8 T and a Debt of $35.5 T (a Debt to GDP Ratio of 123 percent) has no equivalent interpretation in science, it simply makes no sense. It's like awarding the gold medal to the runner who finished last because you are somehow convinced they will be a champion next year!

Obviously, my thoughts and opinions are inconsequential since I do not live or vote in the USA but there are some things that need to be said in other parts of the Western World, as well. I know I am not the only one in Europe who found the rhetoric of the Republican Party offensive, in particular the racist language directed against immigrants and women.
Since Fox News repeatedly reported that this kind of language was effective communication with 'the base', can we safely assume that it reflects the sentiments of most Republicans, hence the majority of Americans? Are they really spiteful people filled with hatred of the other?

Anyway, I will try to penetrate the firewall of negativity that has shrouded America recently and close this on a positive note hoping that our friends across the pond will soon find their feet in the new environment. However, given that the Orange Man is all about projection, I will not be surprised if the Great Depression comes early this time around...

As a sociologist I couldn't agree more! Long long time ago, we were studying Political Economy at Univercity -now it has being replaced with Economics, a "voodoo science" that mixes algorithms with a projection of human psychology to the whole society.
I want to close with a bad joke: At late 30s, Spain had Franco, Italy had Mussolini, Germany had Hitler, Greece had Metaxas, USSR had Stalin, UK had Churcill -and it all ended with a World War. Now we have Orban, Meloni, Nehammer, Mitsotakis, Trump, Putin, Zelensky, Netanyahu. If "history repeats itself, first as a tragedy, then as a parody" we need an extra life (at least) to see the whole movie.
